The short version
We collect a pen name (made up, not real) and the story text. That is all. No email, no real name, no location, no cookies, no tracking. Children can use this site without sharing any personal information whatsoever.
What we collect
Pen name — A made-up name chosen by the child at the time of submission. We ask that real names are not used. We have no way of verifying this, so please remind your child to use a pen name only.
Story ending — The text your child writes. This is stored in our database and displayed publicly in our gallery, attributed to the pen name only.
What we do not collect
AI processing
When a child submits their story ending, the text is sent to Anthropic (makers of Claude AI) for two purposes: (1) a safety check to ensure the content is appropriate for children, and (2) light spelling and punctuation correction.
We send nothing identifying alongside the text — no pen name, no device info, no location. Anthropic's own privacy policy governs their processing.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
And Then? is designed for use by children. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children or from anyone. Pen names and story text are the only data we store, and neither constitutes personal information under applicable law.
Local storage
We use browser localStorage to temporarily carry a story ending from the Write page to the Published Story page. This data stays on the device, is not transmitted to any server, and is cleared after being displayed. We do not use cookies.

We use the following services to operate this site:

Requesting removal
If you are a parent or guardian and wish to request removal of a story ending from our gallery, email privacy@andthenstory.com with the pen name and approximate submission date. We will remove it within 5 business days.
